English vs French Bulldog: key differences

The English and the French Bulldog share a name and a short face, but they are separate breeds with different sizes and needs. If you are deciding between them, compare what daily life with each would mean for your family rather than which one looks more appealing.

Size and build

The English Bulldog is the heavier dog: the FCI standard gives about 25 kg for males and 23 kg for females, on a low, wide, muscular frame. The French Bulldog is a small breed of roughly 8 to 14 kg. That difference matters when you lift the dog into a car, climb stairs or plan for a dog that may one day need carrying.

Ears, face and coat

The easiest way to tell them apart is the ears: the English Bulldog has small, folded rose ears, while the French Bulldog has upright bat ears. The English Bulldog’s head is larger, with heavier wrinkles and a pronounced underbite. Health: what they share

Both are short-nosed breeds and both can suffer from brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), which makes breathing, exercise and heat harder. Both also need care with skin, eyes and weight. Whichever you choose, look for parents with assessed breathing and open nostrils, and budget for veterinary care across the dog’s life.

Which one suits your home?

The English Bulldog is usually calm, steady and happy with short walks, and its weight makes it sturdy with gentle children. The French Bulldog is lighter, easier to carry and often more playful in short bursts. Neither suits long runs or hot climates. Think about stairs, travel, time at home and your budget before deciding.

Your questions, answered

Is the English or the French Bulldog healthier?

Both breeds carry the health risks of a short face. The parents matter more than the breed: look for assessed breathing, open nostrils and moderate build in either one.

Which is better for a flat?

Both can live in a flat with a cool resting place and access outside. The French Bulldog is easier to carry up stairs; the English Bulldog is calmer indoors but much heavier to lift.
