Health pillar / Breed standard
Conformation: function before exaggeration
A breed standard describes type, but no feature should prevent comfortable breathing, clear vision, sound movement or a normal quality of life. AKC and FCI wording differs, so comparisons should use the current official text.
Balance and movement
Assess the dog standing and moving: balance, limb alignment, topline, feet, gait and recovery after ordinary activity matter more than a dramatic still photograph.
- Exaggeration is not quality when it compromises function.
A standard is not a health clearance
Show evaluation and health records separately. Titles, pedigree and visual type do not substitute for respiratory, genetic or veterinary evidence.
- Use the current official AKC or FCI standard for exact wording.
Educational information only. Discuss an individual dog’s health with your veterinarian and review its own veterinary and laboratory records.
